Syphilis
Painless chancre occurring on the penis, vulva, lips, mouth, vagina, and rectum.

Signs and Symptoms
- Can occur 10-90 days after inoculation
- Regional lymphadenopathy
- Genital ulcers
- Secondary stage: flu like symptoms, weight loss, cutaneous bilateral rash
- Latent: Absent or no signs
- Late (Tertiatry): cardiovascular issues (Aneurysms, heart valve inefficiencies, etc.), Neurosyphilis (paresthesias, ataxia)
- Most common in men who have sex with men .
- Unprotected sex (to include vaginal, anal, and oral)
- May also be spread through contact with infectious lesions and sharing needles among IV drug users.
- When treatment is initiated early in the course of the disease, antibiotic therapy to include penicillin G benzathine, doxycycline or tetracycline may be used.
- Treatment can not reverse damage that is present in late stage of disease (Lewis. 2014)
Ghonorrhea
Highest rates of infections are in adolescents. Infection elicits an inflammatory response, which left untreated leads to the formation of fibrous tissue and adhesions.

Signs and Symptoms
- Men: urethral discharge, painful, swollen testicles may occur
- Women: many women are asymptomatic. Discharge, dysuria, or frequent urination may be reported. Changes in menstrual cycle.
- After incubation, women experience redness and swelling around the cervix and urethra with discharge
- 77% of reported infections are African Americans.
- Highest rates of infection seen in adolescents.
- Unprotected sex (to include vaginal, anal, and oral)
- Treatment in early stage is curative with a cephalosporin antibiotic. Usually given IM dose of Rocephin or PO of Suprax.
- Coexisting infection of chlamydia is often treated with Zithromax or docycycline regiment. (Lewis. 2014)
